Summary:
Singapore relies heavily on food imports. The Singapore government has decided to stop importingvarious food stock and food products from various countries in order to reduce importing costs and concentrate on investment on recreational facilities and boost the tourism industry. Therefore, we have decided to grow Japanese Sweet Potatoes in the mainland of Singapore.
1) What is the food or food product that your group decides to farm?
We choose the Japanese Sweet Potato because it is safer to grow our own Potatoes than import them from Japan.
Recently, Japan was struck by a Magnitude 9.0 earthquake, causing one of their Nuclear reactors to explode, polluting certain parts of the country with the nuclear wastes.
Therefore, it is a wise decision for our Singapore government to stop our imports from Japan and grow our own Sweet Potatoes. Consumers are more willing to purchase their foodstuffs from a protected and safe source, rather from a country that is affected by nuclear hazards.
Even if Singapore’s climate isn’t suitable for growing this sort of crop, our country’s technology is advanced enough to manipulate the environment and create a suitable artificial climate for the sweet potatoes are the 2nd most consumed food in Singapore, thus we will definitely receive a good market popularity.
2)what is the method of agriculture your group chose?
We are using Aeroponics to grow our Sweet Potatoes, as just a few days ago, Singapore ended her first water contract with Malaysia. Therefore, we must save water as much as we can, so we consider growing the sweet potato using traditional land methods. I’m sure that many Singaporeans will welcome this agriculture method as we can reduce the usage of pesticides and harmful farming substances, ensuring that our product is healthy for the citizens
3) Choose a location to site your farming activities.
i)We choose to build our facility right beside the Singapore Newater because there is a wide open space near the Newater center. We will be able to cut the cost on the transport of water and it wouldn’t affect any housing developments as it is considered an industrial area.
Sweet Potatoes are tropical crops, therefore Singapore, which is very near the Equator, is a perfect enviroment for growing these foodstuffs. A site with sufficent sunlight and wet soil is also required, as Singapore receives a steady amount of Rainfall and Sunshine every year, PRECISELY what the Sweet Potatoes need to thrive here.
ii) Min. Order: 10 Metric Tons
FOB Price: RMB 7700-7800 / Metric Ton
We choose the 0-52-34 fertilizer. According to our research on the internet, the best fertilizer for sweet potatoes has to to rich in potassium and phosphate, we strive for excellence in the quality of our products, therefore we shall use the best fertilizer for the job. The price is acceptable, since we will import it from Mainland China, an agriculture-based country, the quality of the fertilizer is also secured.
